Superfood: Chia Seeds

I have been on the search for more ways to get the protein and iron that I lack because I do not eat red meat. On that voyage for healthy foods I learned about chia seeds. Chia seeds are one of the many superfoods, which means they are extremely healthy for you.

Chia Seeds contain:

  • Vegan source of Omega-3 fatty acids
  • 5 grams of fiber per serving
  • Protein
  • Antioxidants
  • Amino Acids
  • Complete Vitamins

Some Chia Facts:

  1. Chia seeds are the same seeds that were used in the fad Chia Pets
  2. Chia seeds are low glycemic
  3. Contains a natural anti-inflammatory
  4. Aides in digestion
  5. Originally cultivated by the Aztec’s
  6. They are gluten free
  7. Contains a high amount of plant protein; comparable to that found in beef
  8. Food cravings are cut because of the amount of vitamins and nutrients

The brand of seeds that I bought are USDA Certified Organic, Kosher, and Non-GMO. It also states that 1Tbls is the recommended daily serving. So it does not require a lot of seeds to gain benefits.

Chia seeds are easy to incorporate into your daily diet. They do not have much taste and are crunchy. If you have ever eaten flax seeds or sesame seeds before, they are similar in texture to those.

Ideas for use:

  • Top off a fresh salad with a couple pinches of seeds
  • Add to a cup of yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Mix into a smoothie, or other drinks
  • Add to cereal at breakfast
  • Mix with steamed veggies
  • Top off pasta or soup with some seeds
